Stress Relief Through Mindful Living By Shannon Thier "Nearby, a boy no more than 8 years old, suit bagging around him as he lay on a huge longboard, took a shove into a wave from his dad and made it successfully to his feet. Suddenly, he found himself zipping sideways through the sunshine, and the shock almost overwhelmed him. He screamed in his shrill little voice, "No way! Wow! Oh, man!" with such unbridled joy - so out of the code of taciturn surfer cool - that every man in the water, tough guys included, smiled magnanimously. "Well that's that," said a portly guy on a huge board to the proud father. "You can forget about him ever being President."[1] Such are the experiences we encounter when we are fortunate enough to be provided with the opportunity to live our lives entirely inside the moment. With no concept whatsoever of the following second, and no recollection of the previous one, this is often referred to as “being in the zone”. When one is consciously living Mindfully, that person is residing in the zone, rather than experiencing it at intervals such as the one portrayed in the surfing example above. Mindful living does not imply that one should forget the special times he’d spent with his deceased mother, nor should he stop saving for his young child’s college tuition; rather he should envision the here & now as an open doorway to all potential pathways into the future. Even planning for the future can only occur in the present moment. The concepts of our past over which we have no control - fear, worry, anxiety, regret, etc. – simply cannot exist in a state of Mindfulness; the very foundation of true serenity is the only county in the state. Most people go about their lives constantly thinking about what to do next, or regretting what turned out to be a poor decision in the past. We don’t take the time to “stop and smell the roses”, so to speak. Thus, for example, it is not until we catch the flu that we pause to appreciate how terrific it feels NOT to be ill. Yet when we feel better, we seem to magically forget how horrible we felt, and revert back to allowing little annoyances – most of which probably could not touch the severity of fever, shakes, chills, sweats, nausea, & muscle aches that we had JUST experienced - to interfere with our mindfulness. What most of us lack is the awareness of how to tap into the state of Mindfulness. For those that find it difficult to get into a true meditative state, there is a solution! The exercise in Part II will bridge the gap between one’s desire to meditate and her inability to access the proper mindset necessary to reach that state of tranquility. Many people attempt meditation, find that they simply cannot quiet their minds, and give up in frustration. Meditation should be as enjoyable as it is beneficial. Having trouble or impatience when learning how to do it can quickly reinforce one’s feeling of insecurity if he or she is unsuccessful, leading to an aversion of meditation in general. That is why Part II is vital in rebuilding the confidence of those that have found meditation to be tedious to master. Perhaps the most exciting thing about Mindfulness is that it is the easiest way to make the transition from this exasperating state of inability in clearing one’s mind, to the awaiting freedom that meditation undoubtedly brings. In fact, it is SO simple, all it involves is 2 actions that one can do anywhere and at anytime: INHALING and EXHALING. The only caveat is that most people, like not having the flu, generally take breathing for granted. Only until an individual finds himself hooked up to a ventilator does he actually spend time contemplating the importance of every breath. In Part II, we will examine this technique in detail, as it is a crucial step towards experiencing the genuinely fulfilling life that most people desire. The next section will explore how one can curtail allowing the mind to stress so much about the worries of the past, as well as learn to disregard any fears of the future. Before we continue, ask yourself this: Exactly WHAT is preventing YOU from being happy right here, right now? As we delve into absolutely the easiest yet most fundamental method to approach living Mindfully, it is important to remember the following at all times, particularly during those occasions that are difficult to bear: You have an appointment with the present moment, and you are right on time. The “secret” to happiness is keeping that awareness fresh in one’s mind at all times. I guarantee that most people will be shocked to discover how easy it is to begin opening one’s mind to living in the moment devoid of fear and worry via an ancient Vietnamese proven method that I will explain in detail in Part II. We will also address anger, which is the emotion most responsible for poor judgment and impulsive reactions, and how living Mindfully can free an individual from the burden of such an overwhelmingly negative emotion. One thing I can tell you FOR SURE about the future is that if you check the "Articles" section of Savina’s website – www.MediumReadings.com - throughout the upcoming week, I will show you how YOU can utilize this ancient & simple technique. All you must do is follow the simple steps - which again, involve nothing more than BREATHING at your own pace (no diet, exercise, pills or purchases of any kind necessary!) - you WILL begin to appreciate the ups - and even become grateful for the downs - that you are bound to encounter as you continue living life on life’s terms. Keep checking Savina’s site for Part II, then let’s get you started on the path to serenity immediately! |
